As part of the Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival, Beyond Skin presents a panel discussion and musical performance exploring the important role marching bands play, ensuring they are looking after the wellbeing of their members.
The marching band community boasts some 600 bands spread throughout the province with a number of actual members estimated over 18,000, considered the largest voluntary and community arts sector in Northern Ireland.

The marching band community boasts some 600 bands spread throughout the province with a number of actual members estimated over 18,000, considered the largest voluntary and community arts sector in Northern Ireland. Although both men and women musicians are in marching bands it is a higher percentage of men. The Samaritans 2022 research report 77% suicides in Northern Ireland 2022 were men and 23% were women,
This event explores the impact of playing a musical instrument as part of a marching orchestra and the important role marching bands play, ensuring they are looking after the wellbeing of their members.
